🎤 It was the release day of Olivia Rodrigo's second studio album, GUTS. I was ecstatic as she is one of my favorite artists ever. This was a big night for me on campus because I don't have a lot of music artists that I really like. To celebrate, Associated Students, Inc. hosted an Olivia Rodrigo Listening Party event on campus! It was events like these that made me feel welcomed at Cal State Fullerton. It was events like these that challenged my imposter syndrome as a transfer student.
When I transferred to Cal State Fullerton, I experienced immense imposter syndrome about being a student here. I always thought that one day, one of the students would walk up to me on Titan Walk and say "IMPOSTER!" I was afraid someone would call me out for transferring in my last two years. In reality, Cal State Fullerton's student population is made up of around 50% transfers. One of the people that helped me during my transfer transition was Olivia Rodrigo. Two of her songs talk about having imposter syndrome in her romantic relationship and in the music industry. The songs are called "enough for you," and "teenage dream." The second one was released on September 7 with her album.
It was a powerful night for me because I was in the Titan Student Union Pavilions listening to this song with all of her biggest fans on campus. It felt nice to find another sense of community on campus by attending that event. Now that I am a graduating senior, my biggest piece of advice for CSUF transfers who have imposter sydrome is this: go to events and get involved in any way you can! ✨ It is cheesy advice but it truly works and helped me. It can be intimidating and uncomfortable to go to events by yourself as a transfer.
But if Olivia Rodrigo and her songs have taught me anything, it is that you are not alone in having the imposter syndrome of being in a new phase of your life. 🐘💜
